About the Artist,
BellyDancer, & Tattoo Artist

Tanya Magdalena is an artist of many talents.

Art & Design:
Her passion for creating art encompasses many endeavors. From bellydance performance, teaching, and costuming, tattooing, a unique style of illustration, photography, graphic, publication, and web design, there is not much that is out of Tanya's creative abilities.

Tanya began studying Graphic Design in Jr.High School, continuing through High School, and eventually earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communications/Graphic & Publication Design from California State University, Chico in 1994.

She and her husband moved to Portland, Oregon in 1997 where she made quick work of the corporate ladder.

In 2003 Tanya "lost her taste" for the corporate culture. She is now devoting her passion, and many talents, to artistic pursuits, bringing happiness to her self and those her art touches.

Tattoo:
Tanya put her graphic design, artistic, and business background to work, and pursued tattooing. The State of Oregon has the strictest regulations on tattooing and sanitation, in the world. In 2005 Tanya got her tattoo education/apprentiship under the direction of her teacher and mentor, the infamous Rio DeGennaro. Rio has been tattooing since 1962. Like his father before him, he worked down on the Pike in Long Beach, California with Bert Grim, among others.
In Sept 2007, Tanya opened Above the Pearl Tattoo in NW Portland.

Dance:
In 1991, Tanya discovered the fine-art of Middle Eastern Dance. Introduced and taught by Kendra McClean (Chico), and additionally, heavy Folkloric/Historical influence and education through the SCA, she performed regularly at events from 1991 to 1999. Tanya continued study until 2001, when acid reflux surgery put a halt on dancing for 2 years, but she was still involved in everything bellydance.

In 2003, Tanya added Cabaret to her repertoire, under the direction of Karla Johnson. Influenced by Rachel Brice and The Indigo, Fat Chance Bellydance, Rachel George, Habi Ru, Tanya teaches beginning Tribal (ATS), Triberet, and is teaching assistant to Karla's cabaret class. Tanya performs solo at venues around the Northwest.
